Undara Lava Tubes Tours

For lovers of fascinating geology, natural history or those who just appreciate the beauty of environmental phenomenon, a quick 275 kilometres (171 mi) journey southwest of Cairns will bring you to the amazing Undara Volcanic National Park. Famous for its lava tubes – the largest and longest lava tubes on earth – as well as its 164 volcanoes, cones and vents, a visit to Undara offers a truly unique experience that has to be seen to be believed!

Formed around 190,000 years ago, the Undara Volcanic National Park is a monument to the planet’s amazing power. With over 55 km2 covered in lava from a single volcano, the area is strikingly different from the usual Aussie landscape, with the huge underground tunnels reminiscent of something out of a ‘Tremors’ movie – but on a much larger scale!

Walking through one of the lava tubes isn’t anything like walking into a normal manmade cave – the naturally sculpted walls, colourful mineral deposits and huge diameters of the openings are like nothing else you’ll ever experience. The amazing forces of nature that created these wonders were also generous, leaving deposits of gemstones throughout the area, meaning you can fossick in the hope of discovering aquamarine, garnet, gold, moonstone, peridot, quartz or topaz! Other activities available within the park include bushwalking, mountain biking, wildlife spotting, photographic opportunities, bird watching and more. Regardless of what you do while visiting Undara Volcanic National Park, you’re sure to leave with a new appreciation for geology, a camera full of incredible photos and a host of amazing memories!
