Tour Description

This full day tour starts from the Freshwater Train Station, at either 8.55am or 9.55am with your train journey from Freshwater to the village of Kuranda. Travel in our original Heritage Class Carriages which are fully refurbished, red-wooden carriages that simply radiate old world charm. Learn about the history and design of the unique Railway and the sights that you see on the way with our informative audio commentary played during your journey. The Railway is an engineering feat which runs a 34km route through the Barron Gorge National Park. There are 40 bridges and 15 hand-made tunnels along the way. Complimentary chilled refresher towels and filtered water are provided to keep you cool and comfortable.

We cross the amazing Stoney Creek Bridge, before stopping at the Barron Gorge viewing platform which you can briefly disembark and take some photos. The view of the lush green rainforest and the spectacular Barron Falls are stunning and are a prime candidate for your photographic skills. Once we get back on the train we head into Kuranda where you'll see the heritage listed Kuranda Railway station, famous for it lush ferns hanging from the rafters.

Kuranda offers a wide range of attractions, sights and sounds, all in a quaint village amongst the lush rainforest. Take a walk through the town, enjoy the famous Heritage Markets, and perhaps take in a bite of Morning Tea or Lunch. Though not included in your tour, you can choose to visit the Kuranda Koala Gardens to get up close and personal with one of our iconic animals, or perhaps visit Birworld for an amazing look at some of the local and not-so-local tropical birds. Don't forget the camera! You'll want a few photos of the birds playing with in the trees right in front of your eyes, or even landing on your shoulder for a quick 'hello, how are you' before they're off again on a swooping flight across the magnificent rainforest-habitat space. Perhaps you're more of an insect lover, and if so, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary might be your cup of tea! With around 1500 beautiful tropical butterflies, including the electric blue Ulysses butterfly and the giant Cairns or Australian Birdwing, you're sure to find a species that you haven't spotted before (tip- wear bright colours if you are keen on having them land on you).

Head to the Kuranda Skyrail terminal to board your six-person cableway gondola for your return trip. Glide leisurely just a few metres above the green leaves and sprawling canopy of the rainforest. Enjoy the World Heritage listed Rainforest from a completely different perspective. Take a break from the cableway at 2 different locations, to see more of the rainforest from beneath the canopy, and more of the Barron Falls, this time from the opposite side to where the train was in the morning. With its rugged mountainous landscapes, deep ravines, thunderous waterfalls, gorgeous unique wildlife and tropical lush rainforest, sit back, relax and immerse yourself in the spectacular sights, exquisite sounds and the sweet musty aromas of this very special place. You'll have the opportunity for some great photos from the heights of the cableway across Cairns and on a clear day, you might even spot Green Island in the distance.

Alighting at Skyrail's Caravonica Station, you can pick up a coach for a relaxing 25 minute ride back to Freshwater Station, where you started your day.
